It began with a passion for skin.
ByLykke's skincare series grew out of the idea that skincare should hold both uncompromising knowledge and heartfelt care. The products should be effective, with high levels of active ingredients, free of unnecessary fillers and with a preservation system even the most delicate skin can tolerate. From our home in Aalborg we create skincare for the whole family, developed on the basis of research, yet always built around our own natural signature ingredient.
An uncompromising vision
The idea arose after several years of working in network marketing, where the products did not live up to what Pia Lykke wanted a cream to be. Few ingredients, no fillers that did not have a positive influence on the skin's wellbeing. Creating a filler from colostrum suddenly made sense — there was plenty of evidence for colostrum's benefits when taken internally, so why not externally on the skin as well. It quickly turned into a research project in collaboration with Aalborg University.
In hindsight, colostrum was not merely a filler but became an important ingredient for the skin's cells, rich in useful components. Pairing colostrum with natural, raw oils from shea butter made sense, as it also allowed us to support African women by buying their product. Almond oil and jojoba oil often featured in expensive brand-name products, but only in very small amounts. The idea was therefore to include generous amounts of the good, beneficial ingredients, a simple ingredient list so people with allergies could get an overview quickly, and of course Colostrum Complex as our unique ingredient, unlike anything any other company in the world had.

Nature created the colostrum, science unlocked its potential.
Colostrum is the very first nourishment a cow produces after calving. It is nature's most important source for fragile new life. This ingredient is the defining signature in all of ByLykke's skincare. Between 2005 and 2008, Pia Lykke developed Colostrum Complex in close research collaboration with Aalborg University. Through new, advanced technology, it became possible to isolate, activate and refine the powerful properties of colostrum into a modern, deeply working skincare ingredient.
It took three years of intense research to crack the code. During this period we collaborated with St. Mary's Hospital, London, whose test system was able to prove the ingredient's high level of activity. Likewise, Dietmar Fucks, Austria, found in an in vitro system that Colostrum Complex showed anti-inflammatory activity and supported the skin's natural resilience. An article about the experiment was subsequently published in New Microbiologica in 2010.
In parallel, we tested several hundred people at the University who wanted to see the effect on various skin concerns, and several of them reached out to the press and had articles published about the striking results.
We have also collaborated with a couple of dermatologists in North Jutland, a dermatologist in Germany and a paediatrician, who were likewise enthusiastic about the composition and the results they observed in their selected patients. Using such results formally would require very expensive and extensive trials that we have not been able to finance, so instead our customer base has grown by word of mouth.
